Swimming for asthmatics

One of the most suitable sports for asthmatics is swimming. The environment of swimming pool is offering warm and humid air with no dust. Program includes swimming, breathing exercises and PEF measuring.


Our host is Faculty of Sport with it's swimming pool, that has modern technology of checking the water quality. Even chlorine, which is in most pools in liquor, is in this pool dispersed in small grains, and is so much more friendly to skin and mucus glands.

General benefits of a swimming program and benefits peculiar to asthmatics:
  • development of pulmo-vascular system
  • development of breathing and co-breathing muscles
  • active approach towards control of asthma (kinesiotherapy – therapy with movement, e.g. sports)
  • lower frequency of asthma symptoms
  • learning the right swimming technique
  • learning of different breathing techniques
  • higher capability to cope with physical and psychical strain

A typical session consists of (70 min):
  1. Measuring of the lung function parameters: PEF before the exercise
  2. Measuring of the number of the breaths per minute
  3. Exercises for developing strength and flexibility of thoracic muscles and joints, breathing exercises – 10 min
  4. Swimming, exercises for strength of respiratiory mucles and their synergists in the water – 40 min
  5. Breathing exercises and yoga for better work of lungs and relaxation – 10 min
  6. Measuring of the lung function parameters: PEF in between and after the exercise
